Dr. Shankar Acharya

Prof. (Dr.) Shankar Acharya is a well-renowned Spine Surgeon who has been working as a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), New Delhi, for the past 25 years. He is also the Chairperson of the Department of Spine Surgery at SGRH.
He was appointed as Professor of Orthopaedics, GRIPMER, Indraprastha University, in July 2013.
Currently, he is the Past President of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) from 2020 - 2023 and the Delhi Spine Society from Dec 2015 - March 2022. He is also appointed as Honorary Associate Professor of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
He holds many other prestigious academic affiliations, such as PhD Supervisor at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Spine Surgery, Member of Spine Surgery Specialist Board, National Board of Examinations-GOI, Distinguished Member of O.P. Jindal Global University's Medical Advisory Board, and Clinical Tutor, College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh, UK.
He was the Past Chairman of AO Spine India from 2008-2011.
He has been involved for the last 20 years in organising international and national seminars & workshops. He has developed interpersonal skills that help him function effectively with his colleagues and juniors. He is actively involved in teaching postgraduates and has FNB fellows being trained under him in Spine Surgery.
He has been invited as an international & national faculty, delivered innumerable lectures and presentations, and organised several international and national conferences from 2000 till date.
He is a Member of the Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He is also the Head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
He is also a Member of the Governing Body of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.

My main interest is Spine Surgery, and at present, 90% of my work is focused on the spine. I have had extensive training in all aspects of spinal surgery. I deal with spinal trauma, spinal infections, spinal tumors, spinal deformities, and other adult degenerative conditions of the spine. I perform endoscopic and microscopic discectomies, deformity corrections, mini-open fixations, and other complex spinal fixations. I have performed a wide variety of anterior surgical procedures and carry out all spinal procedures independently, from the cervical spine to the sacrum. Additionally, I perform all types of scoliosis surgeries.
