Specialization, surgical profile and surgical skill labs training
In addition to being actively involved as an academic General and Breast -Endocrine surgeon, have been and am a busy and active surgeon with special interest in Surgical oncology focused mainly on Oncoplastic breast surgery, head and neck and soft tissues cancers. Since I have been working at a very high volume tertiary care center, the spectrum had to be wider and included performing all general surgical oncology and surgery cases both in the emergency and elective settings.
Have been a tutor for “Basic Surgical Skill courses” of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh UK, was very actively involved in the setting of the initial few Surgical Skill labs in the country. Have conducted more than 300 basic and advanced surgical skill courses with postgraduate, undergraduate students, surgeons from across the country and abroad including many cadaveric skill courses.
Mission Statement :
My educational philosophy has its foundation in the age old “Mentor-Mentee” relationship. I truly believe that most of the learning especially in surgical disciplines happens at the elbow of a trainer. An ideal Mentor should be able to see a potential “forest in a seed” and train his Mentees as potential Mentors of the future. The concept however needs to adapt to the newer challenges to expand training and teaching skills in to virtual and universal classrooms to cater to the growing needs & larger numbers.
As Professor, Consultant and Head (formerly) (at a premium tertiary care teaching institution for Postgraduate and Undergraduates) for the last nearly 25 years, I have been actively involved in the Training and Skill development of surgical trainees across India & South East Asia. More than 100 postgraduate trainees have been personally taught and trained by me and many of them did their first surgery, first publication/presentation under my direct supervision. Some of them are now trainers and Mentors as Professors in various prestigious institutions across the globe. An enumerable number of students have passed out under me and have become specialists in various fields of surgery, oncology and medicine in general. Some of them are very able Mentors themselves. Have been an Examiner for Mch (Surgical Oncology), Mch (Breast & Endocrine surgery), MS, DNB(Surgery) for various Universities in India including AIIMS and at TIMS Kathmandu Nepal.
Leadership positions in academics:
As a member of committee of “Master Surgeon Educators- ACS “am actively involved in the teaching and curriculum building exercises. As Governing Council Member of the Association of Surgeons of India (second largest body of surgeons in the world) for two terms(6years) & as National Hon. Secretary of this Organization I had an opportunity to contribute to Post-graduate curriculum and training of across India for the last more than two decades .My active involvement in the National Board of Examination for preparing and implementing the curriculum of the Surgery as well as Surgical Oncology including conduction of examinations got me an insight in to the issues with the training and examination patterns in India .
Awards & recognitions: Best teacher award in 2006, Eminence award for excellence in surgery 2022, For postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in surgery received the “Award of Academic Excellence by the Indian Medical Association-(the largest body of doctors in Asia) in the year 2021”
Organizing Postgraduate and Undergraduate Conferences and workshops:
For the last decade have been conducting postgraduate surgical conferences as Convener and Organizing Chairman SCRUBS, SCOPE and MEDSICON (The International conference for Medical Graduates) that is attended by students from across the globe. Have been conducting Cadaveric skill workshops for both PG trainees and undergraduates for the last many years that are hugely popular in India. During the COVID times have conducted ten webinars for postgraduates that were hugely popular and successful.
Editor in Chief of Journals (EIC):
I have been EIC for the Prestigious Indian Journal of Surgery (Springers publication) for six years and have been the Joint Editor of the Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology (Springer publications) for more than 6 years. Have conducted more than 40 “Scientific Paper Writing Workshops for Postgraduates and Undergraduates” across the country in last decade including “Hands on training in scientific writing”. Have just taken over as Editor in Chief of a Wolter Kluwer publication- “Breast global Journal”
