Interventional Neuroradiology

Departments

Specialists

Interventional Neuroradiology (Endovascular Neurointerventions/Interventional Neurosurgery/Interventional Neurology) is an advanced surgical superspecialty in which minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cerebrovascular, head and neck, and spinal disorders are performed under imaging guidance. It is somewhat similar to the treatment carried out in the heart by cardiologists, such as angioplasty or stent placement. In these procedures, very thin sophisticated and advanced catheters/wires are placed through blood vessels in the hand or groin and are navigated to the site of the abnormal vessels.

Advantages of Interventional Neuroradiology/Endovascular Neurointerventions/ Interventional Neurosurgery:

  • The endovascular approach ensures minimal injury to normal brain tissue.
  • It has fewer complications, better outcomes and ensures a shorter hospital stay.
  • It enables treatment of complex diseases, which could not be treated in the past by reaching areas which are deep-seated or not accessible to open surgery.
  • Patients with acute stroke can be treated even after delayed hospital presentation in selected cases.

The department’s mission is to offer the best minimally invasive treatment and diagnostic imaging for a wide range of conditions involving the brain, the head and neck region, the spine and the spinal cord.

We have extensive experience in providing endovascular treatment and embolization for intracranial aneurysms and AVMs. In addition, we manage and treat acute strokes, carotid stenoses, intracranial atherosclerotic disease, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhages, superfi cial vascular and venous malformations and spinal AVMs and AVFs.

Technology and facilities

Neurointerventional Cath Lab: the latest biplane (in process of acquisition) but presently a single plane fl at panel DSA with 3D technology and with highresolution (2024 matrix) of the cranial and spinal vessels. Flat panel technology, DYNA CT technology and I-FLOW technology is also present for highresolution assessment of the cerebral haemodynamics.

  • Acute stroke interventions (mechanical thrombectormy and intra-arterial thrombolysis)
  • Intracranial aneurysm treatments (coil embolizations without stent/balloon assistance and fl ow divert or placement).
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and arteriovenous fi stulae
  • Tumour embolizations (both preoperative and palliative)
