Renal Transplantation

Departments

Specialists

Kidney transplantation is the most effective treatment option for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It has become the most successful and widespread organ transplantation performed today. The Department of Kidney Transplant Surgery is dedicated to provide comprehensive perioperative care to patients with ESRD. Our team consists of nephrologists, kidney transplant surgeons and specialized supporting staff, which provides effective pre-transplant evaluation, transplant surgery and post-transplant follow-up. Since the fi rst kidney transplant was performed in SGRH in 1987, almost 6000 kidneys have been transplanted, with results of patient survival and graft function comparable to the best in the world. At present, we are performing almost 250 transplants in a year.

Services offered

In the Department of Kidney Transplant, patients with ESRD have access to a range of comprehensive services including:

  • Living donor nephrectomy
  • As per the transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994 – we accept living-related donors only and those unrelated living donors who have authorization committee approval. We offer both open and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.
  • Cadaveric donor nephrectomy
  • We are geared to perform both harvesting and transplantation of cadaveric kidneys and have conducted such operations as and when cadaver kidneys become available.
  • Recipient renal transplant surgery
  • Conducted in state-of-the-art, purpose-built, dedicated operation theatres.

Follow-up care

  • Post-transplant care is conducted jointly by a nephrologist and transplant team with the patient being managed in a purpose-built, state-of-the-art kidney transplant unit.
  • A full service dialysis centre

We also offer

  • Haemodialysis: We have probably the largest experience in creating AV shunt, AV fi stula, graft and permacath for haemodialysis in India.
  • CAPD – we have pioneered and performed more than 2200 CAPD catheter insertions, probably the largest series in India.
  • Surgical training: The department also runs a well-designed training programme in transplant surgery and transplant medicine for the residents of urology and nephrology.

Achievements

The department has to its credit a number of surgical innovations which are now standard procedures. The department is also involved in a number of national and international presentations and has been a member of numerous government and non-government expert committees for transplantation.

The Government of India has recognized the department as a centre of excellence.
