Colon and Rectal Surgery is a dedicated branch of surgery that deals with diseases affecting the large intestine. Colorectal Surgery includes both non-cancerous and cancerous conditions of the colon and rectum, anal canal and pre-sacral region (space behind the rectum in the pelvis). The large intestine or colon is composed of cecum, right colon, transverse colon, left colon, sigmoid colon, rectum and anal canal. Diseases affecting the bottom also called perineum are included in the colon and rectal diseases as well. Disease conditions like pilonidal cysts or sinus are also included in the diseases of the colon and rectum. A specially trained surgeon in managing these diseases is known as a colon and rectal surgeon. The colon and Rectal Surgery division at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a first of its kind in any large accredited hospital in Delhi & NCR and among very few in the country. The burden of colon and rectal diseases is increasing in India including higher incidence of colorectal cancers among our younger population. There is also an increasing incidence of diverticular diseases in India. These diseases were considered as problems of the West, however with increasing life expectancy and change in lifestyle these diseases are now frequently seen among Indians as well. Hence a dedicated specialty to cater to these patients is the need of the hour so that they receive best care and full attention. The colorectal Surgery division at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital provides state-of-the-art care and a focused attention to patients who suffer from diseases of the colon and rectum.

Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Taha Mustafa is currently heading the colorectal division at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Dr. Taha was trained in Minimally Invasive Colorectal and Robotic surgery at Adv Lutheran General Hospital, Ilinois. United States of America. He is in a unique position to manage patients suffering from colon and rectal diseases because of his training both in India as well as in the United States. Dr. Taha was also trained in cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC ( Hyperthermic Intra Peritoneal Chemotherapy) at Basingstoke United Kingdom. Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Trans Anal Minimally Invasive Surgeries ( TAMIS ) . More than 95% of our operations for colon and rectum are performed robotically and laproscopically. This results in minimal incsions and faster recovery and early discharge from the hospital. Ours is also a leading center in country for performig TAMIS. It is a novel minimally invasive technique for removing diseases from the rectum using laparoscopic and robotic techniques. Conditions like large rectal polyps, adenomas, and early rectal cancers can be treated with TAMIS. Patients tolerate the operation well and are discharged the same day or the following day. We also are a leading center in the country in performing TaTME ( Trans anal Total Mesorectal Excision). Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is the only hospital in India that participates in the international TaTME registry.

Colon and rectal cancers. We offer evidence-based management of colon and rectal cancers. Several published studies have shown that there is an increase of severalfold in the incidence of colon and rectal cacners in India. In addition our population seems to get these cancers at a younger age and unfortunatley often at advanced stages. Colorectal surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is leading in cancer care of patients suffering from colon and rectal cancers. Our specialty is in preserving sphincters in low rectal cancers. This has lead us to adopt cutting-edge innovations like Robotic surgeries and Trans anal Total Mesorectal Excsions ( TaTME). We have published our results in leading surgical journals. Dr. Taha is often invited across the country to give lectures on laparoscopic and robotic techniques as well as on TAMIS and TaTME

Colonoscopy. It is a video examination of the large intestine with a flexible special tube called as colonoscope. We perform both diagnostic as well as therapeutic colonoscopies including EMR and ESD. Our emphasis is on screening colonoscopies for the prevention of colon and rectal cancer. We regularly organize public awareness programs for the prevention of colon and rectal cancer.

Cytorecductive surgeries (CRS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). Cytorectution is an operation which is done for patients who suffer from diseases that are present or spread to peritoneum. Peritoneum is the inner lining of the abdomen. Diseases like Pseudomyxoma peritonii and cancers of colon and rectum that have spread to peritoneum are managed with CRS and HIPEC.
